Sabre Brings XML To LCCs
Sabre is trying to solve two problems -- luring low-cost carriers to use its GDS while enabling the airlines to use their own existing technology -- with one solution.
Sabre Travel Network revealed Dec. 10 that it has launched XML connectivity with AirTran Airways that will, the company hopes, provide both the airline and Sabre-connected travel agencies with better ways to serve their customers.
The XML-connectivity launch, which Sabre bills as an industry first, is meant to reach out to airlines whose reservations systems support new, open-system XML communications protocols. These protocols can provide customers with additional services, such as real-time seat map information and up-to-the-minute flight information.
Why it matters: Having access to real-time seat map information helps travel agents understand both how full the flight is at the time of booking and which specific seat assignments they might want to request for their customers, a Sabre statement explained.
Not done yet: Sabre is also working with AirTran to launch additional capabilities, including enhanced booking functionality, in early 2008.
